The Gospel accounts differ slightly on who first discovered the empty tomb, but Mary Magdalene is consistently mentioned as being among the first to arrive and discover it.
* Gospel of Mark: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away, and a young man inside told them Jesus had risen (Mark 16:1-8).
* Gospel of Matthew: Mary Magdalene and "the other Mary" went to see the tomb. There was an earthquake, an angel rolled away the stone, and told them Jesus had risen (Matthew 28:1-8).
* Gospel of Luke: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women went to the tomb and found it empty. Two angels appeared and told them Jesus had risen (Luke 24:1-10).
* Gospel of John: Mary Magdalene went to the tomb alone and found the stone removed. She ran and told Peter and the other disciple (whom Jesus loved) that the body had been taken (John 20:1-2). Later, after Peter and the other disciple left, Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb and encountered the risen Jesus (John 20:11-18).
While the Synoptic Gospels mention other women along with Mary Magdalene, the Gospel of John specifically identifies Mary Magdalene as the first to arrive at the tomb and then the first to see the risen Jesus.
Therefore, based on the Gospel accounts, particularly the Gospel of John, Mary Magdalene is considered to be the first one to see that Jesus was not in the tomb and the first to see the risen Jesus.
