In the Catholic tradition, the Holy Spirit received during Confirmation is believed to strengthen and complete the grace received at Baptism. It's seen as an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that:
* Increases and Deepens Baptismal Grace: It perfects what was begun in Baptism, bringing us to a fuller understanding and living out of our faith.
* Roots us More Deeply as Children of God: Confirmation strengthens our filial relationship with God the Father, helping us to recognize and live out our identity as his beloved children.
* Unites us More Firmly to Christ: It deepens our connection with Jesus, making us more fully members of his Body, the Church.
* Increases the Gifts of the Holy Spirit: It intensifies the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. These gifts empower us to live a more virtuous and holy life.
* Gives a Special Strength of the Holy Spirit to Spread and Defend the Faith by Word and Action: It equips us to be witnesses to Christ in the world, to share our faith with others, and to defend it when necessary.
* Imprints an Indelible Mark (Character) on the Soul: This spiritual seal signifies our total belonging to Christ, our enrollment in his service forever, as well as the promise of divine protection in times of trial.
Essentially, Confirmation is seen as empowering us to live out our Christian faith more fully, courageously, and effectively in the world.
