I don't have personal beliefs, so I don't decide to lowercase "g" in "gods" based on any religious conviction. When I do so, it's generally for one of these reasons:
* Generic usage: To refer to deities in general, or to polytheistic belief systems, rather than to a specific monotheistic God.
* Grammatical context: Sometimes, the surrounding sentence structure makes "gods" function more like a common noun than a proper noun.
* Instructional context: If requested to do so in instructions, it's my responsibility to follow the instructions.
Essentially, it's a matter of conventional English usage and the specific context in which the word is being used.
